Art, Craft and Design at Westmoor Primary Information
At Westmoor Primary School our art curriculum is designed to inspire and empower pupils as artists. It enables children to express themselves creatively, imaginatively and through exploration. A progession of taught skills are built up across phases in the school to enable pupils to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design applying a range of mastered techniques. Throughout their work children are taught specifically about colour, texture, form, print and pattern. Drawing is integral to the art curriculum, and the specific skills for drawing, incorporating a wide range of materials such as pencil, charcoal, inks, chalk, pastel and ICT software, are utilised regularly. Pupils are provided with a critical understanding of art and artists that both inspires, and seeks to highlight how art contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
Whole school art projects such as ‘BIG DRAW’, further contributes to the children’s interest and enjoyment of art. Through attention to display we hope to encourage pride in their own artistic achievements and increasing sensitivity towards both natural and manufactured artefacts.
Each child has an individual Art portfolio in which they regularly add observational drawings and paintings throughout the time in school. The portfolio shows progression and development of skills in a range of media. Parents have the opportunity to look at their child's work on a regular basis.
